Axie Infinity is certainly the most popular crypto game currently around, although not necessarily for good reasons. It consists of a strategy RPG game that allows you to collect, train, breed and battle “axies” (creatures similar to Pokémon) to earn digital currency in the form of AXS and SLP. In order to play the game it is necessary to purchase three axies, which costs several hundred dollars, but it is possible to make a return of investment in about two weeks by playing the game a couple of hours a day. The economy of the game makes it so that it is possible to earn a small fortune by playing regularly, which is why it has become popular in third world countries, particularly in the Philippines. Axie Infinity is easy to play and accessible enough that anyone can jump into it, which combined with its profitability contributed to the success of the game. That said, it is somewhat lacking in terms of entertainment and the “fun”, which puts it at risk of being overtaken by better projects in the future.

Pros and Cons

  • + Very established game
  • + Cute NFT collection
  • + Possible to earn stable “income” by playing a couple of hours a day

  • – Gets repetitive and not very fun after the first couple of weeks.
  • – Initial investment cost of several hundred dollars to buy axies.

Is it worth playing?

Depends. Frankly put, Axie Infinity is not fun. But at present it is possible to make several hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars a month playing this game, which is why it has become so popular, especially in developing countries where players can effectively earn the equivalent of their country’s average salary by playing this game. That said, a game that is not fun to play is basically a chore, and there is no way to tell what the future of Axie Infinity will look like.

Axie Infinity is a crypto NFT game like Pokémon, and like many other crypto Pokémon copycats such as Ethermon, Starmon, Binamon, and so on. It is an RPG with a breeding system and micro-economy similarly to DeFi Kingdoms.
